The Tirana Police started this Saturday taking security measures for the arrival of Pope Francis.
Vehicles are not allowed on Tirana’s main boulevard, and police officers are present in every crosswalk.
Parked vehicles have also been removed from main roads, after being informed one day earlier.
All these measures are part of the security plan for guaranteeing the Pope’s safe arrival this Sunday.
There will be 27 checkpoints in Tirana, all within the perimeter around the “Skenderbej” square, the “Deshmoret e Kombit” boulevard and the “Mother Theresa” square.
Police say that they will inspect all participants at this checkpoints, even with metal detectors. Police warned that those who don’t want to undergo a control will be taken to the precinct.
People who have invitations need an identity card. The National Guard says that those who have an invitation but are not on the Guard’s list will be taken to the police.
There will be very harsh security measures this Sunday. All high-rise buildings will have at least 50 sharpshooters who will survey the area.
As for the Pope’s travel to the Rinas airport and the Bubq village, police say that the road to Rinas will be blocked this Sunday from 08:00 to 10:30, while all roads to Bubq will be blocked from 17:00 to 19:00.
The Interior Ministry is taking all measures for securing the Pope’s visit in Albania, by involving all law enforcing agencies.
The leader of this operation is Artan Didi, the General Chief of the Albanian Police. Drivers are asked to limit their movements in Tirana’s main roads.
Measures are also taken for medical emergencies. Visitors will have maps of health centers in case of need.
