The two chiefs of the Economic Crime Units in Tirana and Korca have been suspended by order of Interior Minister Sajmir Tahiri.

Police declared that they did not fulfill their duties in the action held yesterday against the illegal gambling casinos, and that they even cooperated with the owners to hide some of the machineries.

Chief Inspectors Olsi Muci, Head of Economic Crime in Korce, and Ervin Dalipaj, Head of the Economic Crime in Tirana, were suspended and will be prosecuted for being involved in the unlicensed gambling businesses.

Police say that they have notified some of the owners to close their shops before the police arrived. Interior Police sources say that they were conducting a second covert operation in parallel with the first one, in order to find out any possible leaks.

All Police chiefs were under surveillance, and two out of 12 chiefs of all districts leaked the information. The Interior Audit at the Ministry is conducting a further investigation on them, to see to which point they were involved in the illegal business.

The operation has continued by seizing all unlicensed machineries. This is the second step of this action. Hundreds of machineries of unlicensed subjects were seized early in the morning.

According to the police, the third step will be blocking licensed businesses who have not paid their obligations. Official data show that there are more than 600 illegal businesses so far, and the situation is very chaotic.
