In a joint media conference with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama from the coast of Shengjin, Prime Minister Meloni thanked the government and the Albanian people for their help, after visiting the Works in the migrant reception center.
The migrants’ agreement provides for the processing in centers in Albania of illegal immigrants who arrive in Italy from the coast of North Africa.
“I am happy to be here, so hat together with PM Rama we closely verified the situation of the works within the framework of the signed agreement. As we heard from Rama, our countries are two friendly countries and have historically cooperated. I thank Prime Minister Rama and the Albanian people again for the help they gave us to realize this agreement, which I hope will be an example for the EU. All that remains for me is to repeat the closeness of the Italian people to Rama, and to give support after a denigrating campaign against the Albanian government, where it has been unfairly labeled as a ‘narco-state’”.
Rama on his part, said that the capacity of the accommodation center for immigrants coming from Italy to Gjadër is 3,000 people, and after their request is examined, they will leave again for the neighboring country.
“At this point there has been a lot of confusion, which not only has not been rejected by the EU, but has been considered as an effort to be followed and as a process to be evaluated step by step.”
“The fact that we are behaving as EU countries should behave comes because there is a special legislation for the redistribution, which says that when an immigrant steps in Lampedusa, he steps in the whole EU. Redistribution means that all countries take their burden to manage all this flow of people.”
“This center here makes a lot of noise just because we are not in the EU and that if it was in an EU country it would be something normal. There are only 3,000 accomodation places, when these places are vacated, they will be refilled”, added Rama.
