One month before the selection of the winning project that will bring
gas from the Caspian to Europe, the Albanian Prime Minister, Sali
Berisha, asked the “Shah Deniz” consortium to base the winner selection
on the market rules.
From the conference “Albania, a new model of development” that gathered representatives of the most important projects in the country, Berisha noted the disadvantages of the rival Nabuco Project and valued the Trans Adriatic Pipeline.
“TAP is the most feasible, most economic and most structured project. I want to underline that this project should be a priority even for the energy balances of Europe. ‘Nabuco Light’, which is a rushed project, comes from the ‘Nabuco Big’ project. I’m not saying that this shouldn’t be built, but there is time for that. I wish and hope that the decision will be based on the market principles. All we want from the consortium is to fully respect the market rules”, Berisha declared.
The Chairman of International Affairs and Agreements for the TAP Project, Barnin Piechorowski, asked the Albanian government to prepare a national master plan for the distribution of gas.
“Albania needs a master plan for enabling gasification. The development of new gas markets is a complex process that requires deep knowledge, because it is composed of many elements, including the knowledge on the market; a developed infrastructure; the creation of regulating institution and the necessary legal framework”, Piechorowski declared.
TAP would turn Albania into an important part of the gas distribution system from the Caspian to Central Asia and Western Europe.
