Photoxin, the main suicide alarm in Albania, is still sold without restrictions

The phenomenon of self-poisoning with phototoxin is increasing in Albanian society.

After the recent cases of suicides of women using photoxine, the investigative program Fiks Fare conducted a survey of many agricultural pharmacies in Albanian cities and noticed that the restrictions are not applied by any of these entities to market the powerful poison.

Law no. 105 “on the protection of plants” clearly defines that photoxin is a highly dangerous and highly poisonous ‘grass’. The rules for the sale of this poison indicate that is prohibited to persons who have not been provided with evidence of special ability.

But none of the agricultural pharmacies in Durrës or Tirana, where Fiks Fare journalists were directed, requested neither the prescription from the agronomist nor the special testimony.

A few days ago, a 41-year-old woman ended her life using phototoxin, as did a teenager from Koplik.

Fiksi went to several pharmacies in Koplik, Durrës and Tirana where they proved that phototoxin is freely marketed in agricultural pharmacies.

Agricultural pharmacies in Koplik, even after the tragedy with the teenager who killed herself, still sold phototoxin, but as they say in the video, only to adults or “known” people.

Fiks Fare extended the observation to 14 agricultural pharmacies in Durrës and Tirana. Even in Durrës, phototoxin is sold freely. The journalist asks the seller for photoxin for his bean plants, and the pharmacies sell it freely although it is not allowed.

The same situation is repeated in the agricultural pharmacies of Tirana, where they are initially reluctant, but then the journalist manages to buy it without any major problem.

There are many cases of the use of phototoxin for suicide in our country, especially women, as it is impossible for toxicologists to save their lives because of the speedy action of this preparation.
