Peje, Conference of Regional Ministers of Defense

05/11/2011 09:25

The city of Peje looked different than usual this Friday. The Western
city of Kosovo held for the first time the Conference of Regional
Defense Ministries.

Six Western Balkan states, Kosovo, Albania, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro and Slovenia signed a joint declaration for the safety area.

These states have agreed through this declaration to coordinate their capacities to respond to the civil emergencies in any of the signing states.

The six states have also expressed their support for the participation of the Ministry of the Safety of Kosovo in the regional initiatives.

Asked if this means that the Kosovo Special Forces could now be considered an army, the Minister of this force, Agim Ceku, replied:

“All our efforts and work are for making Kosovo achieving all necessary military capacities. This conference is a further step towards integration”, Ceku declared.

Serbia and Bosnia&Herzegovina could become part of this declaration, but so far they have refused to participate in the meetings where the state of Kosovo is present.

The lack of cooperation of these states in the security area was the reason why the Organizer of this Conference of Regional Defense Ministers has not invited them.

The Albanian Defense Minister declared that this conference is important for the Kosovo Security Forces and Kosovo’s integration in the euro-Atlantic structures”, Minister Imami declared.

The importance of this conference was also valued by the Kosovo President, Atifete Jahjaga and the Prime Minister Hashim Thaci.

Besides the Defense Ministers of the six states, in this conference were present the representatives of NATO and US Command, Kevin Lunch and Mark Montgomery.

In this Conference were also present the Kosovo President and Prime Minister, Atifete Jahjaga and Hashim Thaci.

Three of these Ministers, although representing different states, were Albanian: the Defense Ministers of Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia.
