The President of Albania, Ilir Meta, declared in an interview for RTK in
Prishtina that issuing Albanian passports to Kosovo citizens for them
to benefit from the visa liberalization would cause a suspension of the
visa free regime for all Albanians.
“Issuing Albanian citizenship doesn’t resolve the problem with the visa regime for Kosovo. Albania is being monitored by Schengen countries together with the European Union countries regarding their obligations. A decision without being consulted would cause a visa suspension for all Albanian citizens. It may not be productive despite the positive intention”, Meta said for RTK.
However, Meta says that conditioning the visa liberalization with the border demarcation is unfair, now that Kosovo has fulfilled all the EU obligations.
“It is not fair that the Kosovo citizens are the only ones in the region who cannot enjoy the visa liberalization system. If it was on me and on the other institutions of Albania this would have been already done”, Meta said.
He added that more efforts are needed for unblocking the visa liberalization matter, and they must work with Montenegro and the EU about demarcation issues.
