The Albanian Parliament voted this Thursday for appointing the members
of the authority that will open the communist Secret Service files. The
opposition abandoned the floor.

The Parliament voted in favor of Altin Hoxha, from the SMI, with 76 votes in favor, 1 against, 3 abstaining. They voted for Maringlen Kasmi, from the SP, with 88 votes in favor, three against; and for the former political prisoners, Daut Gumeni, with 76 votes in favor, and Simon Mirakaj with 75 votes in favor, as proposed by the Human Rights Association.

The candidacy of the Democratic Party, Selami Zalli, was rejected with 67 votes against, nine in favor and four abstaining.

MP Ben Blushi has said earlier that the authority will not offer transparency for citizens and that the process would be politicized. “You may pass the law, but the authority who will open the files will not be credible”, Blushi said.
