The Albanian Parliament, an environment mostly dominated by women, on
March 8th had another view. It market a parliamentary activity of all
women politicians from all Albanian communities of the region. The
Alliance of Women Parliament Members, led by Parliament Member Mesila
Doda, gathered has gathered all Albanian women politicians in the
region, and even figures from other sectors.

Besides joining the voices of women for more justice and equality, the focus of this meeting was on the bigger opportunities of the Albanian women today for overcoming borders and being a stronger factor. The Albanian woman Parliament Member who has kept this duty longer, Flora Brovina, led the session and reminded the difficult times when regardless of difficulties, the Albanian women found the way to support each other, such as in Kosovo’s case.

“We survived to oppression, massacres, the exodus and we found a way of communication. We helped our sisters in the most difficult times and found our second homes”, Brovina declared.

“Today we have a factorization of the Albanian people, not only in Macedonia and the Presheva Valley, but also in Montenegro, and Chameria is not forgotten anymore. This is a new position and a historic turn, for which women played an extraordinary role. We were there when courage was needed, when sacrifices were needed, and we were ready to give our contribution tirhoug our vision, so that the progressive visions of the Albanian people could finally go towards justice and the processes for empowering the Albanian nation, and that all of this can go towards the euro-atlantic values and vision”, declared Edita Tahiri, Deputy Prime Minister of Kosovo.

The Democratic Party Parliament Member, Majlinda Bregu, says that women are still targeted by violence, despite the progress in politics and other institutions.

“Women who have received mandates as Parliament Members have been obliged to leave and be replaced by men. This is a lack of respect, a hidden violence against women, without mentioning the political corruption the is being made with the vote”, Bregu declared.

“I can say that fortunately there are many women and men in this country who think and act differently. This is proved by the fact that today’s government has the highest number of women in the 100 years of the Albanian republic”, declared the Minister of Defense, Mimi Kodheli.

However, another battle for the Albanian women, besides the gender issue, is uniting and having more cooperation with each other.

“An applaud for all the ladies that for 20 years have fought in this arena, so that we could be where we are today. Things will change only if we will be united, otherwise our fight is lost without even starting it. I trust that we will win this battle. I trust that the century that is coming is the century of women, and why not, of Albanian women wherever they are”, Kodheli declared.
