Saranda in the southern coast of Albania was shaken this morning by a massive explosion at the entrance of the Bizant Hotel on the main promenade of the city.
The explosion severely damaged the 2-story building while causing damage to more than 40 businesses in a radius of hundred meters around the building.
Dozens of residential apartments in the entire district of the city were also damaged. Around noon, the engineering forces from Tirana arrived at the scene to carry out the expertise of the explosive material and the quantity used.
According to the preliminary assessment, several kg of explosives are believed to have been planted at the scene. The police escorted around 10 people to be questioned about the incident, including the son of one of the owners.
The building which has been operating as a business since 2011, registered in the name of Miranda Çabiri, the daughter of one of the owners, has reportedly had a long series of ownership problems between the three co-owners. The building was owned by the privatization law in 1991 and the ownership conflicts started in 2002.
