After three hours of debate, the judge panel of the Court of Cassation
in Rome ruled over the Otranto Tragedy. In March 28th 1997, the Italian
“Sibilla” ship caused the “Kater i Rades” ship to drown with 108 persons
on board.
The captains of both ships, Namik Xhaferri and Fabrizio Laudadio have had their sentence reduced to three years and six months for Xhaferri, and two years for Laudadio.
The lawyers of the victims’ families say this verdict is not enough. They say they will follow the case in other courts.
The same thing was confirmed by Pushime Cala, the representative of the victims’ relatives, who declared they expected this kind of justice. She says that their next step will be the Court of Strasbourg.
