OSCE: End of the political stalemate

20/07/2011 15:00

The Chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe,
the Lithuanian Foreign Minister Audronius Azhubalis appealed the
Albanian government and opposition to start the political dialogue in
order to continue with the reforms. (UPDATE)

The controversy about the appealing process after May 8th local elections shows the need for further electoral reforms, but it has shown above all the urgent need for having both political parties act in a responsible way.

“I appeal the government and the opposition parties to overcome the deep polarization and mistrust, in order to end the political stalemate”, the declaration says.

On behalf of this organization, Minister Azhubalis declared that they are waiting the final decision of the OSCE office of Democratic Institutions and Human Rights, ODIHR, an office that can support this electoral reform. But meanwhile, there will be no delays for the establishment of the political dialogue. This first step is indispensable for the functioning of the democratic institutions in Albania and especially in the Parliament.

The Lithuanian Minister, the next OSCE President declared his readiness to support the government and the political parties to come together in cooperation with the civil society in order to find a wider reform agenda, including the electoral reforms.

After the declarations of the European Commission, the Executive Organization of the European Union and that of the EU Foreign Policy representatives, this other appeal for dialogue seems on first sight as a race of declarations between different EU institutions. But this also tells the perception of the international community that the political crisis in Albania is real and is impeding the country to progress.
