Dhimo Cero from Xarra, has been cultivating citrus for 18 years. He says that this year because of the coronavirus pandemic traders have shown more interest in oranges, unlike previous years when tangerines and lemons were the consumer’s favorite of the citrus family fruits.
“All this product goes to the domestic market, and also abroad. now traders are desperately looking for orange and surprisingly want it half green, well unripe. ”
Citrus family fruits in this period are being sold at a convenient price for the farmer. According to Dhimos, this price must be held by all farmers, otherwise they will suffer losses. “The price of an orange is good, 50 lek per kilogram. But someone comes out and takes it down and everything changes then. ”
His 6 ha citrus fruit plot has forced Dhimon to stay away from his family. His wife and children live in Greece, while Dhimo is taking care of the trees, during almost all 12 months of the year. “This is navolina orange which I got from Greece, it ripens quickly, but I can also put it in the oven when it is green. There is work all year round with spraying, pruning, watering and harvesting”, tha fermer adds.
