‘United’ was the slogan at the start of today’s event called by Sali Berisha, but the unification of the Democrats didn’t seem to happen in this Assembly.
35 Democratic Party MPs rejected the invitation by distancing themselves from the former Prime Minister.
Among the 1800 delegates who will elect the new National Council this evening were some old DP figures such as Josefina Topalli and Arben Imami, who accepted Sali Berisha’s invitation.
The Assembly announced the date of May 22th for the election of the new chairman of the Democratic Party, as the main candidate is Sali Berisha.
“Basha betrayed the Democrats. Now we will have a re-established opposition,” Berisha said, referring to the former resigned head of the DP.
In the re-established opposition, the chairman of the parliamentary group of the party, Ekelejd Alibeaj, was dismissed by today’s assembly.
The new statutory changes stipulate that the decision-making body automatically includes all members of the parliamentary group, including former leader Lulzim Basha.
But he and 34 other DP MPs will reportedly not use this privilege. Almost two thirds of the parliamentary group today started a new journey, divided by the Berisha portion of the DP, while a court decision is awaited on which faction the current logo of the party will belong to.
