Only 52,000 out of 110,000 Albanian families are now receiving social assistance from the government welfare program. Almost 60,000 were left out by a new scheme created between the World Bank and the Albanian government.
However, the scheme has left out many families who really are in need, and who became victims of computer system errors.
Lam Xhipi’s family is one of them. For the past 10 years, social welfare has been his main economic resource, until Nine Months ago.
The World Bank scheme is based on a complex point system which aims to remove from this list families that receive unfair payments. But the strict criteria and bureaucratic procedures have left out many families that already lived in misery.
The World Bank admits that the new scheme may had affected families that are really struggling. They say there’s an undergoing negotiation with the Albanian government to increase the number of families. Until then, they will be forced to live in misery, victims of maybe cold computer errors.
