The head of the Journalists Union, Alexander Cipa, met with Ombudsman
Igli Totozani, and expressed his concern regarding the Central Election
Commission’s decision that obliges media outlets to broadcast electoral
video materials previously edited by the political parties.
After the protests Cipa declared that now is the time for the institutions to communicate, because this verdict affects the Constitutional articles on the right to get informed, besides violating the media freedom.
“We consider this as a very dangerous precedent that risks and violates the independence of information, the reporting of the Albanian media outlet, and deforms the natural mission of the media, making the political parties to decide on how the public opinion is informed about the electoral campaign”, Cipa declared.
“In principle, we are for not damaging the media freedom at any circumstance. We have established a working group that will prepare the official stance of the Ombudsman. I believe that there will be a recommendation for the Central Election Commission, but it might not be the only means that we will use”, Totozani declared.
The Journalists’ Union started its protests a few days ago, while the Central Election Commission reacted by saying that they have taken this decision by following the Electoral Code that has been approved by the political parties.
