Ilia Kareli, the Albanian prisoner who killed a Greek guard after he
wasn’t allowed to meet his sick mother, was beaten to death by the Greek
police. Besides the coroner’s report confirming this, other Albanian
prisoners say for Top Channel that Kareli’s sentence had been finished and he was
being kept in prison unfairly.
“Ilia had served his time in prison, but they removed his right to be free. When he learned that his mother was dying and he wasn’t allowed to meet her, he committed the tragedy”, declared Endrit Bacaj, from the Malandrino prison.
Altin Hasani, another Albanian inmate, gave an interview from the Nigrita prison, where Kareli passed away. Hasani declared that he was kept isolated and was not allowed to communicate with anyone.
“Kareli was in an isolated cell, supervised by cameras. We did all we could to meet him, but it wasn’t possible. The Prison Directory did not allow us”, declared Altin Hasani, from the Nigrita Prison.
Ombudsman Igli Totozani reacted right after the coroner’s report was published. In a live interview on Top Channel, Totozani declared:
“Albania is constitutionally bound to support its citizens wherever they are. Even in a residential way. Albania’s obligation in this case is to defend the citizens’ rights wherever they are. I expect Tirana to be in contact with the Greek side and protect the human rights. We are talking about the truth in this case. There should be a constant interest to the Greek competent institutions”, Totozani declared.
