Kamez Agricultural University has built in Valias a modern implant for
growing all varieties of olive trees that are autochthones to Middle
Albania.

This implant that houses 500,000 young plants per year, not only helps the 1000 year old olives of Middle Albania to resist times, but is one of main bases for extending the project of olive planting in a national scale, a project that has the personal support of Prime Minister Berisha.

In a two year period, 10 million olive trees have been planted all over the country, 1/3 of which as subvention from the Albanian government. This makes Prime Minister Berisha optimist for the consolidation of this market.

“In this process, in the next four years, we aim to plant 20 million trees and turn Albania into a big producer of olive oil in the region and wider, an oil that has an eternal market”, Berisha declared.

For the Prime Minister there is another very important project, that of planting chestnuts, almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts and pomegranates all over the country. Together with an irrigation project, expected to start soon, Prime Minister Berisha considers that this will be a main project for developing rural areas of the country.

“We cannot compete with wheat or corn, but we are very competitive with nut trees. We must plant as much as possible for capturing the European market. We are in first phase of building another Albania, that slowly will become the most beautiful garden of nut trees”, Berisha emphasized.
