24 hours after the Albanian President, Bujar Nishani, decreed Gent Sejko
as Governor of the Bank of Albania, the majority has been silent. Prime
Minister Edi Rama didn’t say anything for the media, while the
president’s decree requires their votes.
The reasons might be two:
First, the choice of Fullani might not have the attention of the majority. This will be seen in the Socialist Parliamentary Group of this Tuesday. Sources from the Socialist Party say that the main topic of this meeting might be Fullani’s proposition.
The Socialist members at the Commission of Economy will focus on the fact that Nishani’s proposition is not based on the law for the Bank of Albania, which grants the President with the right to propose the Governor, but by chosing only one of the nine members of the Supervisory Council of the Bank of Albania.
The President cannot propose a member of the Council, because the law sanctions that three members should be selected by the government, five by the parliament and one by the council.
The new candidacy of Mr.Sejko comes from outside these institutions. This was the debate in distance between the President and some representatives of the majority, especially Erjon Brae, who leads the Parliamentary Commission of Economy.
There are words that there might be unofficial consultations for overcoming what might the a stalemate between the President and the Prime Minister regarding the issue of the governor.
We must not forget the fact that the Socialist Movement for Integration is part of the majority, which has an important decision-making role for the governor.
The official silence might also be related to the fact that the President and the Prime Minister are not in Albania, because Nishani is traveling to London and Rama to Brussels. The upcoming hours will be intensive and might bring surprise solutions.
