Nut trees, government promises 290 million USD

In the opening speech of Agriculture Minister, Genc Ruli, was noted the fact that he didn’t mention Berisha’s giant number of nut trees planned to be planted, 250 million of them. The Minister declared that investments in this sector would make 43.000 farming families profit more and the processing would open 900 jobs.

“The annual production for these cultures is 290 million USD. The annual revenues are expected to be 160 million”, declared the Minister of Agriculture.

“Albania might plan to occupy Siberia to plant 250 million trees, because we have no land for that number”, one agriculture expert declared under voice for the Prime Minister’s idea.

Ruli thanked PM Berisha for the idea and declared that this investment will be based on private work, without giving any details on how many money are needed for planting 250 million trees and what advantage could Albania have compared to other countries,

“Mr. Prime Minister, you were the initiator of this major program. You have always been its supporter, which has been a great help for us. I want to thank you on my colleagues behalf, Mr. Prime Minister”, Ruli declared.

Albania currently has 10 million fruit trees, 6.2 olives and 760.000 citrus trees, concentrated in Kukes, Diber and Elbasan.

Nut trees production in 2010 was 4000 tons. Between the current 272.000 trees and the PM’s 250 million there’s a long way to go, but Berisha is optimist, same as the Agricultural Ministry experts.  

“The realization of this project will be one of the biggest financial investments ever made in the Albanian agriculture, in both private and public sectors. It will also be one of the most lucrative projects that will improve the average level of farming revenues and employment in rural Albania, but above all, will also realize the dream for a Green Albania”, Ruli declared.
