Albania celebrates Liberation Day

Albania celebrates today the 74th anniversary of liberation from the nazi-fascist regime.

Albania was invaded by fascist Italy in 1937, who kept the country until September 1943, when Germany occupied it before the Albanian fighters could liberate it.

To keep their power intact, the Germans announced that they would allow Albania to declare sovereignty and organize its state. Albanian fighters from a national movement, National Front (Balli Kombetar), collaborated with the Nazi and held several government positions under the protection of Germany.

This was opposed by many Partisans, from the Communist Party, who kept fighting against the Germans by organizing themselves in guerrilla formations, receiving small support from the Allies.

On this date, a series of activities are held to commemorate the historic events. The Armed Forces of Albania organize parades while state leaders visit the martyrs’ cemetery.

However, the right-wing Democratic Party refuses to celebrate this day. They only celebrate November 28th, one day before, the Independence Day declared by Skanderbeg in 1443. They claim that November 29th was invented by communists to falsify history.

For the Socialist Party of the left wing, this day honors the men and women who fought for the country against the Nazi and Fascist, putting Albania on the side of WWII winners.

Festivities were held by Socialist PM Edi Rama. Shkodra, the city led by a Democratic Party Mayor, did not celebrate.
