The Zvernec beach is one of the most beautiful and least known areas of Albania’s southern coastline.
Portonovo, which has most winds and currents, would have been a perfect place for sufers from around the world.
However, there is not a single sign around this beach to inform swimmers about how dangerous it is.
Last Saturday, two girls and one Albanian holiday-maker from Macedonia lost their lives in this area.
Two days after the tragedy, the beach is full of people again. They say they chose to lave the noisy beaches behind by coming to this wilderness.
However, the deaths of three people has had its toll. Beach goers know this is not a place where you can swim very deep.
“There are no signs, no lifeguards, nothing”, says one of the holiday makers.
Tragedies like the one in Portonovo show how necessary it is to have a better information system for visitors, and more inspection by the authorities.
