The problematic turn which connects Vilunin and Velipoja, the spot where 4 people died the morning of August 2nd remains dangerous for drivers. Despite all the critical reaction in the media after the accident, here is no sign of barricades that will divide the canal from the road. Members of the local community and people who visit the area on holidays say they have been requesting the authorities for some years now to take measures.
But for the Road Authority the drivers are the ones to blame. Director Dashamir Xhika says the accident happened because of the high speed of the car in an area out of his agency’s jurisdiction, just in the section when the road’s ownership passes to Shkodra Municipality. For his part, he says the road was equipped with the proper signs. “The accident happened 30 meters out of our jurisdiction”, Xhika said, adding that people who want to avoid their responsibilities are making wrong statements, but acknowledges that financial possibilities of his institution are insufficient. “National roads need a fund around 400 million $ in order to have contemporary standards”, he says.
