On the final day of his visit in the USA, for the 67th session of the UN
General Assembly, the Albanian President, Bujar Nishani, attended a
meeting with the UN General Secretary, Ban Ki Moon.
The General Secretary congratulated Nishani for his election and expressed the appreciation of the UN for Albania’s contribution, especially for the commitment in the UN reform.
Ban Ki Moon congratulated the head of state for the successful organization of the Tirana Conference about the process “One UN”, underlining the special importance and the dynamic engagement of Albania in this process.
The General Secretary valued Albania’s developments, considering it a modern country and with a quick development. He thanked the Albanian President for the moderate role that Albania plays in the region and encouraged him to continue in this direction.
On his behalf, Nishani congratulated the General Secretary for the second mandate and guaranteed him for the full support to Albania.
Nishani valued the coherent position of the General Secretary about the regional developments, for peace, security and especially the aspects regarding Kosovo. He also invited Ban Ki Moon for a visit in Albania.
Nishani: Returning trust to judiciary
The Albanian President, Bamir Topi, considered the reviving of the judiciary system as vital.
Nishani valued as indispensable the return of the citizens’ trust to the judiciary and for its realization presented some of his plans.
“We must return the people’s trust to the judiciary. This is related with the election of responsible judges. This is our first step that will give a direct impact. I have asked a unification standard for the judicial practices. We will turn the judiciary into a path that will turn the page that today is a great challenge for the Albanian society”, Nishani declared.
Asked about the murder of Chief of the Shijak Police, Tahiraj, whose murderer was released by the Court, the President gave his opinion.
“This is related with the priorities of the High Council of Justice. We must have a procedure that covers all violations and blocks the abuses. We are oriented to go in parallel with these directions. We are strictly cooperating with the Prosecution, because the cooperation between the institutions will be important”, Nishani declared.
Another important point mentioned by the Albanian President was the trust that the President must win with the public’s opinion, moving away from political rhetoric.
“The conviction starts from the constitutional behavior. Everyone must organize the behavior of institutions based on the Constitution. The President must not deviate at the political issues. If he will be supported on what the Constitution says, the citizens will make everything possible to return the trust”, Nishani continued.
