28 women are expected to be released with the New Year Amnesty, while 28 others will receive a 1/3rd reduction of their sentence.
The government has not been this generous with men. The Ministry of Justice, Etilda Gjonaj, declared that men sentenced up to 2 years in prison will be the ones benefiting from the amnesty, if the decision has been taken until September 30th, 2019, or if they have up to two years to serve from this kind of sentence.
Another category that is going to benefit are men over 60, who weren’t sentenced for crimes that are excluded from the amnesty.
The decisions for the amnesty will also need the Parliament’s approval.
