New point-based punishment system for drivers

23/01/2015 00:00

A new point-based punishment system will enter in effect for drivers in March. Drivers will lose points for every violation.

The Ministry of Transportation explains that there are 20 points in total. There are 61 violations that can reduce points, and drivers will lose 5 to 10 points for every violation.

For excessive speed, drivers will be fined with 8 points. If the same violation is repeated, they will lose 10 points.

For red lights, DUI or failing to follow a traffic officer’s instructions, drivers will be punished with 10 points.

When the driver remains with zero points, he must appear at the Commission of Discipline.

Minister Edmond Haxhinasto declared that the legal acts should be ready within January.

The new system doesn’t mean that drivers will need a new license. Within 2015, candidates will have to undergo a psycho-physical test, which tests their physical and psychological abilities in front of various road conditions.
