New name for Macedonia? Propositions to be discussed with Greece

Macedonia will take in consideration the new propositions for changing
its name, as an effort to end the Greek objections, which are leaving
the country outside NATO.

Macedonian Foreign Minister, Nikola Dimitrov, said it is still too soon to speak about any specific offer, but this Wednesday they are meeting Greek Ministers to bring back trust between both countries, although Athens vetoed against Skopje’s NATO application in 2008.

“I will ask them if they want as neighbor a stabilized and friendly country, offering hope for justice or democracy? Because if we are good neighbors, then I hope that the Greek political forces will understand that this is about a historic occasion”, he said.

Greeks cannot accept the name “Macedonia”, which, according to them, is the name of their northern province.

Nikola Gruevski deepened the antagonism with Athens after naming airports and highway after Alexander the Great, making the ancient Greek warrior into the national hero of his nation.

In this interview with “Financial Times”, Dimitrov mentions “Upper Macedonia” as a variant, a name that has been mentioned for years.

“This name will be voted by a referendum in Macedonia. We will ask all parties for consensus”, he is quoted.

The Macedonian Foreign Minister is attending a visit in Brussels together with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev, meeting with EU and NATO leaders.
