The Government of Albanian introduced a new law in Parliament, to give the “martyr” title also to people who died protecting electoral processes.
This will benefit the four victims of the January 21st protest, led by the now ruling Socialist Party, in 2011, who were shot dead as they protested in front of the office of then Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
But they are not the only ones. This law will give the martyr status also to protesters who died against the communist government in 1990.
Another article of this law considers martyrs citizens of Albania who have fought with the Kosovo Liberation Army in Kosovo, and those who died in the 2001 conflict in Macedonia.
