New law for elections in Kosovo

With six votes in favor and three abstains, the Commission for
Legislation has approved the raft for changing the law on elections. The
draft will be sent to the Parliament and will be reviewed in the next
days.

“The draft law will be compiled at the Parliament’s office, and it is scheduled for Monday. Then it will be up to the procedures, since we have finished our work. I think that there many improvements and there will be a positive result in the electoral process”, declared Arben Gashi, Chairman of the Commission.

This Commission decided that the electoral campaign will last 15 days, and not 30. The vote of the political subject will go to the leader of the political party or to the person who keeps the list.

For Behar Selimi, from the Democratic Party of Kosovo, this is something legitimate. He said that the work done by the Commission is to be praised.

“I have said it and I am repeating this. For me, this is related to the legitimacy and not legalization. These are two different issues. The legitimacy of leaders is earned through elections within the party, and after that they demand votes from citizens”, Selimi declared.

The electoral threshold remains the same: 5% for political parties, 7.5% for coalitions, and 2.5% for independent candidates. There were several debates during the meeting.

As regards the identifying documents that need to be used for voting, Albulena Haxhiu, from the Self Determination Movement, asked a specification for all valid documents to be part of the Republic of Kosovo only.
