The “Mbreteresha Geraldina” Maternity Hospital will have a new
clinical-biochemical lab where pregnant mothers can perform tests for the
Mediterranean anemia, or Thalassemia, which is widely spread in our country, especially in the Myzeqe area.

This test could be done only in private clinics, but now pregnant mothers will use modern techniques for the testing, thanks to this equipment.

“The hemoglobine electrophoresis will be used for the first time in our lab, and it is very important, especially for the fact that we can test women who carry the Mediterranean anemia, which is widely spread in our country”, declared Suela Lela, Chief of the Lab.

The Health Minister, Ilir Beqja, declared that new procurements will enable the purchase of all necessary reagents for this lab.

“These equipments make possible the realization of these important tests for the first time in our hospital. These are important not only for the mothers’ health, but also for their children. This shows that we offer more safety for the health of the Albanian people. I believe that even health professionals and doctors who work here will be safer, because their work and medicaments will be more efficient with better examination”, Beqja declared.

This lab was made possible by the Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Coordination, thanks to the assistance program for the Albanian Health Care.
