New criminal code enters in effect

The Criminal Code has changed in Albania also because of a recent
discovery. Arms were being trafficked through our country’s postal
office, with gun parts entering in packages and then being mounted
inside.

On the day when the new code enters in effect, the main Prosecutor of the Serious Crimes unit, Eugen Beci, says that changes help removing the limits created by former legal gaps.

“The novelty here is including the trafficking of gun parts in the arms traffic crime. It wasn’t present in the past law and this made it difficult for prosecutors in some cases. This makes some daily legal practices easier, because in the past we have had transportation of gun parts to Albania, and it was difficult for us to prosecutor the authors, because the criminal code didn’t specify that trafficking gun parts was a crime”, Beci declared.

An important addition is the domestic human traffic, which goes to the Serious Crimes, for cases when a woman is exploited for prostitution within the Albanian territory, or even for other purposes.

“The changes are mainly related with blood feud murders and domestic violence. The most significant changes are those related to the human traffic concept. For the first time in Albania human traffic charges will be raised even when the victims are not used abroad”, Beci declared.

“Whoever will touch the Albanian women, must know that the lowest punishment is 20 years or life to prison. No lawyer, judge or prosecutor will ever help them for a lower punishment”, Minister Halimin warned.

The change for which legal experts are expected to make more comments is that of the domestic crimes, which now goes to the Serious Crime prosecution, an institution that was established in 2004 to investigate and punish organized crime and illegal traffic.
