New agreement with TAP, government wants more profits

Albania wants to reopen the negotiations with the TAP pipeline, after Greece has signed a more favorable agreement.

“Greece has signed a later agreement which has some favorable elements for the profits of our community, for the involvement of Albanian companies for the environment”, says Koli Bele, General Secretary at the Ministry of Energy.

The government has hired the Roland Berger company for consulence. They will compare the individual agreements that Greece and Albania have with TAP, and will translate in financial values what Greece has profited more.

“The role of consultants is to calculate profits. This is a very technical process”, he explains.

But Roland Berger is the same company that consulted the government for the existing TAP agreement, which is now seen as not very favorable.

“I cannot judge what the former government and this company have done before. But big and worldly renowned companies are not too many. It is correct and there is no problem if it is the same company. The expertise of the company is important”, Bele says.

The new negotiations are expected to make the government ask TAP for more investments for the communities involved, such as schools, hospitals and a bigger inclusion of the Albanian companies during the construction.
