The Foreign Ministers of NATO countries will hold a meeting in Brussels,
also with the participation of the US State Secretary, Tex Tillersen.
The US State Secretary made it clear that the three important discussion topics for the US are: first, to make sure that NATO has all of its resources, including the financial ones, which are needed to fulfill its mission. Second, the US wants to discuss how the allies can improve their fight against ISIS. Third, they want to discuss the situation of the Alliance in Europe, especially in Eastern Europe, as response to the Russian aggression in Ukraine and elsewhere.
The EU High Representative of Foreign Policy, Federica Mogherini, underlined that the NATO presence in Balkan is tied closely to the fight against terrorism. She said that a stable Balkan will be key to confront the threats of foreign fighters.
“I visited Bosnia and Kosovo recently, and I was encouraged to see that their authorities are very concentrated with their efforts against this threat. The lesson learned there and in Afghanistan is that the best way to fight terrorism is projecting future stability by training local forces”, Mogherini said.
The Ministers will discuss about sharing the financial costs of defense, which the Trump administration plans to increase. Only four NATO members, Estonia, Greece, Poland and Britain have fulfilled their obligations by giving 2% of the GDP.
