“NATO should accept its role as a safety generator In Europe and work
for the open-door policy, in order to accept other aspiring countries
from southeastern Europe”.
On this suggestions, the Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, bases his analyze published on the prestigious “Project Syndicate”, where world leaders and renowned politicians write their articles.
As head of the Albanian diplomacy, he says that he understand better than anyone else the value of the Northern Atlantic Alliance, due to its past and the role of NATO in Kosovo in a troubled Balkan. Bushati starts this analyze with the annexation of Crimea by Russia, which should serve as a reminder, especially for Eastern European countries, that NATO makes the main pillar of national and european security.
Passing with his analyze from Crimea to Balkan, a fragmented region that keeps facing issues with the state-forming, the rule of law and inequality, Bushati says that this region remains a challenge for NATO.
“For as long that European Union membership remains far from these countries, Europe and NATO should not ignore the challenges which Western Balkan countries are facing”, he underlines.
“The NATO members should accept that the territory protected by NATO has turned into a competitive area as regards security”, Bushati says.
“Followed by the pursuing of conflicting agendas of expansion, it brings us in the conditions when the international right and the basic democratic principles may be violated without punishment, such as Putin’s actions in Ukraine. We don’t have only the interests of security in Europe under threat, but also its values”, declared the Foreign Minister, underlining that the Alliance should face and answer concerns about the existing security gaps.
“The answer is not postponing difficult decisions regarding the future capability and role of the Alliance”, Bushati says, adding that “no efforts should be spared about making NATO stronger, otherwise Crimea’s annexation from Putin’s Russia would be only the beginning”.
