Although the NATO Summit in Wales was not about enlargement, the
accession of the four aspiring countries were discussed in these
meetings. Three of these countries are our Balkan neighbors.
Montenegro might turn into the 29th NATO member. Bosnia must resolve first a political stalemate, while Macedonia is still in stagnation. Besides resolving the name issue with Greece, the allies asked an equal treatment of the Albanian population, a stance that Albania supports, despite the policy of open doors.
“The appeal of the participating countries is for a better coexistence, for an implementation of the Ochrid Agreement and for respecting the media”, declared the Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati.
Albania requested a bigger presence of NATO in Balkan, as a country that was parised in the Wales summit for the contribution. This is not only for the geographical closeness with the troubled regions in Europe and the threat that comes after that, but also because the phenomenon of extremism has found more terrain in Balkan,d ue to the social-economic conditions.
Albania insisted through the Foreign Minister to establish a structured relation between NATO and Kosovo to guarantee the same relations as with the EU.
“All Balkan should be part of the NATO, regardless of when the enlargement might start. We asked that the relations between NATO and Kosovo should be like those of Kosovo and the EU, in order to fight this phenomenon”, Bushati declared.
