The inhabitants of the mountainous area of Fushë Arrëzi in the northeast of Albania have started to consider the collection and sale of mushrooms as an important source of income.
One of them, with whom Top Channel’s Rudina Muça shared the working day, told the program “Cattle and Agriculture” that the working day during the harvest season brings up to 40 thousand lek ($40) a day.
In rough calculations, in one month the income can reach up to 300,000 lek.
The mushroom picker also showed us how to distinguish a poisonous mushroom from a non-poisonous ones.
“We have three types of mushrooms here. This year the price was low here in the mountains. We sold them for 3 thousand lek kg. Last year we sold it for 6 thousand lek. It has rained a lot this year. We collect 20 to 30 such mushrooms per day. I have learned to distinguish them from those others have shown us to be not good or poisonous. There are many poisonous mushrooms here. For a month and a half we are in the peak of the season. The profit depends on the collection, but for a month and a half we do not fall below 40 euros per day. In a month, the figures reach up to three million lek”, said the collector, satisfied with the relatively new foraging experience.
