Hate speech and bullying on social networks have led to the death of a mother of 4 children in Durrës in central Albania.
The 41-year-old woman from Sukthi committed suicide after using a quantity of phototoxin on January 2. It was supposed to be a day of celebration, as it was her eldest daughter’s birthday, but she chose to kill herself to put an end to the ordeal of unjust accusations against her.
She had been working for years in the factory producing ropes and this is where the conflict with another employee started. The conflict was transferred to social networks where a video with photos of the victim and insults to her morals and dignity was published.
In December 2022, Bedrie Loka reported to the police that a fake profile with her name had been opened on social networks. In relation to this report, the police stated that they have referred the case to the prosecutor’s office, while family members and factory managers avoid making statements about the event.
The pressure and conflict in the community opened up again, which is the reason why the deceased is suspected to have chosen to end her life.
The prosecutor’s office has launched investigations to clarify this case and bring legal responsibility to the people who have misused its data, while civil society has announced the organization of protests regarding the death of Bedria and the injustices to girls and women by bullying on social networks.
