Death rate in car accidents in Albania is twice higher than in the
European Union countries, although the share of cars per capita is also
much smaller.
11.9 Albanians per 100.000 die each year in our country, while the average in the European Union is 4 to 6.
6939 people have died from car crashes from 1992 to 2013 in Albania. The number of accidents increases each year, and most of them end up with serious injuries.
The police says that the most frequent cause of these accidents is excessive speed and ignoring of traffic rules.
The Ombudsman also lists other factors that cause accidents, and some of them are the bad quality of roads and the lack of road signs.
The report says that projects are stopped in half and roads are used without even being completed. Supervisors are often representatives of the investors, and that’s where the conflict of interest starts.
The report says that based on statistics, 10% of the accidents is caused in humid roads, mostly due to potholes. Another cause is the fast increase of the number of vehicles, which goes faster than infrastructure in urban areas. Since there is not enough infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians, they are also involved in accidents more frequently.
The Ombudsman says that the lack of illumination in national roads is also a cause of accidents.
The report continues with the car safety and the fact that our market is dominated by used cars. As for speed and the usage of alcohol, the Ombudsman says that they are still a serious problem, together with the usage of cellphones while driving.
