The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, declared a temporary suspension
of all new construction permits in Berat, Gjirokaster and Kruje, and
canceled the construction of the poly-functional building that was to be
built together with the new mosque in Tirana.

The mosque’s permit remains in act, as it had been already decided.

After a meeting at the National Council of Territory, Rama made a presentation of the current situation of the territory.

“Territory is one of the main points of our long-term strategic development, while problems are diverse. There is a high pollution of rivers, discharges of sewage waters on rivers and then to the sea, and even in important tourist areas. There are significant cuts of water supply due to the losses in the network, large areas of flooded lands, extraordinary deforestation of unacceptable proportions from fires and cut trees. There is a chaotic urban development, and the construction and demolition of illegal buildings has brought consequences, since it has been made in a barbarian way. There is a degradation of the cultural heritage areas, a full lack of institutional presence. This is only part of the panorama that our country is facing today”, Rama declared.

“We have a series of other problems, a constant occupation of properties and as consequence, incomplete property documentation, which threatens the future and which has already put us in difficult conditions in the existing urban areas”, the Prime Minister declared, announcing the first important decision of the Council of Territory.

“Every permit will be temporarily suspended in Berat, Gjirokaster and Kruje. The two cities are a heritage not only of Albania, but also of the world. However, Gjirokastra is today in the red list of UNESCO, due to the buildings that are about to crumble. The Kruja castle also is endangered due to the illegal constructions around”, the Prime Minister declared.

When asked by Top Channel, Rama answered also for the decision to suspend the construction of a 16-story building in Tirana.

“As you have heard, the government will take the necessary decisions to open way to an unstoppable process, by adding a task-force that will focus on this plan, and by focusing the energy of all institutions to the implementation of law. The Interior Ministry has an essential role, because illegal construction in Albania is a criminal act. On the other hand, the new law, the action that we will take and which is legally structured, we will intervene with the strength of the law and there will be no turning back. As for the legalization process, it will continue in parallel. No new illegal construction will be tolerated”, the Prime Minister declared.

Rama also announced two important decisions for the Albanian capital, which suspended the permits of the commercial centers that were about to be built together with the mosque.
