In her last speech before the electoral year of 2019 for the European Parliament, the EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security, Federica Mogherini, declared at the annual conference of EU Ambassadors that during the upcoming year they should do more to turn into reality whatever was achieved so far.

“We have still a lot to do, so that we can leave to my predecessor, next year, to whoever will have the honor and pleasure to continue this work, all the necessary instruments for making a proper job”, Mogherini said.

“It will be an intensive year for opening Albania’s and Macedonia’s accession negotiations. Allow me to be clear. This is an opportunity that must be grabbed right now. This is not a ceding from our part. It is in the interest of our European citizens, within and outside the EU. In Balkan it is clear today that the EU is a reference point. Allow me to tell something to those who fear that other powers are being more present in the region: as long as we are present in the region there will be no room for others”, Mogherini declared.

The EU high representative brought to attention the fact that last year was very intensive, but the next months will be even more decisive. She also spoke about the Kosovo-Serbia relations.

“I believe there is a real possibility for presidents Vucic and Thaci to reach an agreement that will address all open cases between Belgrade and Prishtina. An all-inclusive agreement, legally binding, for normalizing the relations between both countries, based on international laws and that could help with the stability of the entire region. Allow me to mention dates, because 2019 will be the 20th anniversary of the war in Kosovo. This is why I think it is time to bring this conflict to an end”, Mogherini said.
