Mogherini: “EU is ready to start accession negotiations. Now it is up to Albania”

“It is absolutely clear that Albania is Europe. This is why you must leave behind the ways of harsh rhetoric and follow the European way towards the EU”, Mogherini said.

The Head of the European foreign policy declared that the EU will not be complete until Albania becomes part of it, but it is up to Albanians to progress with the integration processes.

“Enlargement is a joint choice that we are doing together. It is now up to Albania to take the next step”, Mogherini said.

The High Representative underlined that the implementation of the judiciary reform is something that Albania needs, not Brussels.

“Albanian citizens, not Brussels, want a judiciary reform for the government to work better. It is a responsibility of the Albanian institutions to fulfill it. An independent judiciary which fights organized crime and corruption will attract young people and investors who are interested for business. It is time for Albania to take the necessary steps. We are ready to start negotiations”, Mogherini said.

The EU representative added that the problems between political parties in Albania need to be resolved inside the respective institutions.

“Albania’s next steps in the integration path depends on the judiciary reform, especially the Vetting law. For this reason, politicians have the responsibility to work inside institutions, the Parliament, in this case”, Mogherini said.
