Mjekes military plant

This plant was built in 1962 for the construction of explosives, and it successfully realized a project funded by Senators Nun and Lugar, destroying the Albanian chemical weapons, produced in China.

The Mjekes plant is close to the city of Elbasan and 50 kilometers from Tirana. It has six small units which are currently producing explosives that are used in mines.

Its products is exported to Kosovo, while the production line is even wider. The plant built in 1962, received the “Bofro” license in 1982, to produce powerful explosives.

After the closing of the program for destroying the chemical weapons, the plant was used for demilitarizing 1.3 million mines of the Albanian army, and also other types of rockets.

The plant that was initially built secretly in an desert area, now has been surrounded by a number of houses built by people who returned to the houses they used to own.

Currently there is only one plant working with the production of explosives, and the implants used for the destruction of mines and missiles are still functional.

The Albanian chemical weapons were destroyed through an American expertise, not only for the personnel, but also for the funds.

It is still unknown if Mjekes will be the place whee dozens of tons of Syrian chemical weapons will be destroyed, but it is the only military plant that has experience, and personnel that has worked in former projects.
