The law for minorities in Albania was opposed by the representatives of the Greek minority, which is the largest in Albania.
“It would be fatal if this law would be voted tomorrow in Parliament. Not only it adds nothing to the current ones, but it also removes, giving more powers to the Council of Ministers. It removes many rights that we had from the Council of Europe Convention”, said Leonidha Papa, chairman of OMONIA.
OMONIA wants what has been requested in Macedonia, usage of both languages in administrative units where one third of the population belongs to the minority.
According to them, there should also be a concrete distinction made between ethnic and cultural-linguistic one, since the Vlach community is not a national minority, but a linguistic minority, and most of them were self-declared of Greek ethnicity.
But Minister Bushati was very direct with his answer to OMONIA:
“This law removes the privileged status of one minority above the others. It removes any distinctions that we used to have until today”, said Ditmir Bushati, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs.
