The Albanian Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, declared that electricity is the weakest point of our economy.
“This sector is suffering from a huge monetary deficit caused by huge debts. There are companies operating with losses due to the lack of liquidity”, Giknuri declared.
The World Bank representative, Salvador Rivera, declared that Albania needs serious measures to get out of this situation and improve indicators, or even reform the current market model.
“There is no doubt that the Albanian Power Company (KESH) and the Distribution Company (CEZ) are facing difficulties. Some of the important measures to be taken are increasing the money collection, reducing losses and reforming the current market model. We support the Ministry’s reforms and we are ready to support investments”, Rivera declared.
As for the energy price increase, the Minister declared that the new fees will not affect families.
“The energy cost should be more reflective. Certainly, we will take care that the price will never affect families. That is why we want a stable price. But we also want to orient our reforms on stopping abuses with electricity”, Gjiknuri declared.
The World Bank representative demanded the protection of vulnerable groups.
“The only way to put this system at work is making a serious intervention and a full recovery. We agree that the energy system will improve by protecting vulnerable groups”, Rivera declared.
