After several debates regarding a project for leasing the Lezhe Castle
and some other monuments, so that the private businesses can use them
for profits, the Minister of Culture, Mirela Kumbaro, has rejected the
decision.

Kumbaro declared that this project is now suspended and will not be signed.

“There was a project for building a hotel and some other premises at the Lezhe Castle. Nothing has been built, because this project has not advanced and is now being reviewed. I was at the Lezhe Castle one week ago and no construction has started, because there is no agreement signed for that project. We will look every case of illegal constructions. They will be demolished and we will review the decisions that have been taken by the National Council of Restoration, such as the Lezhe Castle, which will not be finalized with an agreement”, Kumbaro declared.

Two years ago, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture, Youth and Sports presented a project for the revival of culture monuments, with the Lezhe castle being one of them. A concrete wall was built in this historic castle, by even damaging its ancient walls. The then Minister of Culture, Aldo Bumci, declared that the project for leasing culture monuments to transform them into restaurants or hotels was within the laws. But the civil reaction was immediate, since it damaged the historic values of Albania.
