The Minister of Interior, Saimir Tahiri, declared that justice was not made for the January 21st victims.
“State crime has not been punished yet, and secondly, it shows we need to reform the Justice system, starting with the judges who sanctioned a second crime, regarding the victims”, Tahiri said.
The government decided a few days ago to grant a fund for compensating the victims. The Minister of Interior added that the government was waiting for the trials to be over, before compensating the victims.
“The last trial was over on January 12th, this is why we met after that date. This doesn’t make the pain easier for their relatives. But we have taken legal measures that the January 21st doesn’t happen again. There are new laws against the usage of weapons by state police against citizens. We are also transforming the National Guard from a military unit, to a police force that will answer to civil standards”, the Minister of Interior declared.
On January 21st, 2011, the Socialist Party in opposition held a protest in front of Prime Minister Berisha’s office. The National Guard that was protecting the building fired against the crowd, killing four unarmed protesters. The son of one of the victims committed suicide later.
