Minister of Energy: “Electricity VAT may be reduced next term”

The Minister of Energy, Damian Gjiknuri, said that the improvement of
the energy sector and of the economy in general may bring to the
realization of a promise that the government has been unable to keep so
far: reducing VAT for energy, and the price for consumers as result.

“Reducing it wasn’t possible due to the financial pit that was created with the energy sector. The economic growth in Albania is giving good signs for the future, and it will contribute for more revenues. This will allow us to review the tax policy in the next mandate. I don’t want to talk about numbers”, Minister Gjiknuri said.

Albanians pay 9.5 ALL per KW/h, 20% VAT included. The 20% VAT may be reduced, while the energy sector indicators are still positive. Losses for 2016 dropped to 28.4%, a record for the past 20 years. While money collecting from current accounts has increased with 86.6%.

The debt that consumers, businesses and institutions have accumulated towards the Energy Distribution has dropped with 105.2 billion ALL. In parallel, the debt of the Energy Distribution to the Energy Production and Transmission Operator has dropped with 93.6 billion ALL.
