The Chairman of the Foreign Commission at the European Parliament, Elmar
Broke, considered it strange that the Albanian Parliament Speaker, Ilir
Meta, did not resign when there is an investigation undergoing with
accusations against him.
In an interview for Top Channel, the colleague of Mr.Broke from the CDU, Olav Guttling, was against Meta’s resignation.
“The rule of law is a foundation stone for democracy. All parties should respect the division of powers, such as Courts, Prosecutions and the Parliament Speaker, who I know is working as the Constitution requires. Now that there are no formal charges but only speculations based on a political background, the opposition should express their concerns in Parliament and not outside the Parliamentary procedures”, Gutting declared.
The CDU MP gives this suggestion to the Albanian colleagues of the opposition: “The EU and the USA support the resolution of the Parliament for cleaning politics from Parliament Members or other people with criminal ties. The government and the opposition should work together to fulfill the duties, because that is what they have been voted for. The European path of Albania should not be withhold by false accusations, especially when they come from politicians with a suspicious past, as it has been strongly noted by the political stances of the USA and EU representatives in Albania”, Gutting underlines.
The German MP says that the parliament should focus in fulfilling its responsibilities to the citizens who aspire for a better future, rather than being withheld by the personal agendas of Parliament Members with a suspicious past.
