Meta: Regular elections will resolve our issues

The President of Albania, Ilir Meta, declared for the Italian newspaper “Il Giornale” that the political crisis in Albania can only be resolved through regular elections.

“If I hadn’t postponed the elections on October 13th, a date which coincides with Albania’s Eu accession negotiations, the confrontation between the political fractions would have been unavoidable”, Meta declared.

According to him, the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, has not understood that holding local elections without the opposition will be a serious problem for the country’s Eu accession negotiations.

The President said for the Italian media that the June 30th elections were held without opponents, same as during the communist regime.

He also disagrees with the turnout, saying that it is much lower that then 23% announced by the Central Election Commission.
