Meta: Recak Massacre must always be remembered to avoid such crimes in the future

21 years ago, on January 15th, 1999, the few Recak residents who hadn’t left their homes woke up early in the morning to the sound of heavy gunfire.

The Serbian military and police troops entered the village, 30 kilometers from Prishtina, and executed 45 Albanian civilians.

On the day that commemorates this genocidal act, the Albanian President, Ilir Meta, wrote that the Recak Massacre must be always remembered so that we can prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“We shall always remember not only the lost lives and their sacrifices but also the firm truth on which we are building the peaceful co-existence in our region”, Meta declared.
